About a year before construction was scheduled to start, we met with these homeowners for an introductory project consultation. They were replacing an existing house with a new-build and the contracting company had encouraged them to work with a designer.

Although our initial meetings went well, the homeowners decided to tackle the design work on their own. Construction wasn’t scheduled to start for a year, and they felt they had lots of time to figure it out. We wished them a successful project and encouraged them to call if they needed any direction.

Two years later—we received a request from the homeowner and contactor to meet with them at the project site. The renovation was well under way. The framing was completed along with some of the exterior cladding, and the electrician was on site installing wiring.

The homeowners remorsefully told us that in the two years since our first meeting, they had only managed to select some of the plumbing fixtures. They still had no idea what to do with the kitchen and bathroom designs, flooring, lighting, countertops, cabinetry, paint colours, appliances and exterior colours. The renovation and design process proved to be overwhelming for them, and now they needed us to step in and finish.

LUCKILY, we had an unexpected gap in our schedule and we were able to jump in right away. We wrapped up all the construction related design work without delaying the project. As you can see from the finished photos the overall design of the home flows beautifully and each area has a balanced and cohesive design.

However, there was a huge cost to this “11th hour” design approach. The homeowner underwent incredible stress, budgets went out of control, interior finishes were scaled back considerably, and unimaginable consequences resulted from a lack of early planning.

The homeowners had done everything right at the onset of their project. They engaged a contractor and architect to walk them through the early stages of planning. The contractor had intuitively steered them in the direction of hiring an interior designer. Outside of their lack of experience, what they lost sight of and failed to pay attention to was the percentage of their budget that would be required for the interior finishes, along with the time and attention needed to coordinate these final, and arguably most important details.

Working full time in the residential design industry for two decades, along with the role of business owner and principal designer, Celia has acquired a wealth of experience and knowledge. Throughout this time, she has carefully observed and contemplated the process of getting her clients from point A to Z in their home renovations. With persistent fine tuning she has developed a process that not only supports the homeowner through their journey, but one that consistently and safely lands them in a beautiful home environment, which they love.
