The beautifully coordinated interior design work in Chronicles of Theodore has been showcased on the cover of Our Homes Magazine. The Oakville, Burlington, Mississauga issue featured a full project spread inside, where designer Celia Alida Rutte was interviewed.

In the article Celia shares some of her experiences working with the family. “Sometimes clients get really fixated on each individual piece, every paint colour, every fabric, every piece of furniture,” says Celia. “It can become very difficult to pull everything together. Tony and Elsie let me guide them through the process, and they understood that at the end—it all has to come together.”

The key inspirations for the design of this transitional style home came from two pieces of family history. The first, a colourful glazed roof tile from Portugal. It was discovered while sorting through a pile of ornaments the family had saved from their previous home.

The second was a beautiful, antique, dark wood dining table with six chairs and a matching hutch. It was a treasured collection of furniture passed down through the homeowner’s family. Both items are now proudly on display in this newly renovated home, representing elements of the family’s southern European heritage.

These important connections to our past, and the stories they tell, are sadly missing in many of today’s contemporary style homes. Even though this renovation project was a new build, the design reflects the unique character of the homeowner and is brimming with personality.

One of Celia’s favorite design elements in the home is the collage of framed family travel photos that she coordinated for the living room wall. Each photo exhibits a rich detail of traditional countryside décor, once more telling a story of the homeowner’s life, and tying in beautifully to the inspirational roof tile that originally launched the interior colour palette.

In the principal bedroom the traditional style furniture was updated with contemporary wallpaper, modern floral toss cushions, and a sexy fur throw. With the right accessories, artwork, materials, and light fixtures, traditional does not have to be boring or out of fashion.

The laundry room was very popular on the home design platform Houzz. Year after year it won awards and was saved thousands of times in the idea books of online users. The project as a whole, also won the Bild Award Renomark for Best Reno Over $500k with an addition. The success of this award-winning home design, reinforces that when classic elements are integrated well, they are always in vogue.
